Despite his remarkable ability to complete the stage, the 35-year-old was unable to start the Stage 6 route from Binche on Longwy because of a neck injury. Team TotalEnergies and leader Peter Sagan, who were depending on the Italian to help establish supremacy on the climb, have been severely hampered by his absence.

Oss’ withdrawal was confirmed by a team statement published on Thursday: “Additional testing indicated a vertebral fracture that necessitated a few weeks of immobility. As a result, Daniel Oss must withdraw from the Tour de France.”

However, it wasn’t the only significant incident to occur on Stage 5; Primoz Roglic later successfully realigned his own injured shoulder. Although his Tour would continue, the Slovenian Jumbo-Visma rider collided with a safety bale that had wandered onto the road.

Roglic acknowledged that being in that situation “was not nice,” but he was enough seasoned given that it wasn’t his first time. After Stage 5, he stated, “I then put my shoulder back in the socket myself.” “I sat in the audience since I couldn’t do that while driving. There, it worked.”
