Cole Palmer England debut will trigger payment in Chelsea deal with Manchester City
Manchester City will be owed a further payment by Chelsea if Cole Palmer makes his England debut in the coming days.
The 21-year-old has been rewarded for his fine start to the season by being called up by Gareth Southgate for the European Championship qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
Palmer was brought into the squad alongside Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Manchester City’s Rico Lewis after the withdrawals of James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk.
The Chelsea star moved to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City over the summer in a £40m transfer, but with around £2.5m potentially coming in add-ons to that deal.
The Sun report that one of those add-ons will be triggered when Palmer makes his England debut, meaning Chelsea could owe the Premier League champions a further sum either on Friday when the Three Lions host Malta or Monday when they go to North Macedonia.
Palmer has made a brilliant start to life at Chelsea, scoring four goals in nine Premier League games since his move south.
The latest of those was a last minute penalty in the thrilling 4-4 draw with his former side on Sunday, which he admitted was a strange experience.
‘Very, very strange,’ Palmer told Sky Sports of facing Manchester City. ‘First time I’ve played against City since I left, but I’ve got the utmost respect for the club that I spent 15 years at. It was nice to see some friends, unlucky not to get the win but it was a great game.’
Asked whether he had friends and family in Manchester who will be annoyed with him, he said: ‘Yeah probably, got many City fans I know. But it’s the game innit.
‘It was amazing, I was excited before the game to see some faces and show what I can do. It was a great game, we went behind a few times and bounced back.’
