Enzo Fernandez has backed Mauricio Pochettino’s project at Chelsea after a disheartening draw to Arsenal

Enzo Fernandez has vouched for Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Brentford this weekend. The Blues will welcome Thomas Frank’s side to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon in what is expected to be a fiery west London derby.

Pochettino will be desperate to return to winning ways after a disappointing draw with Arsenal. The 51-year-old led Chelsea to a two-goal advantage before a mistake from Robert Sanchez in the second-half gifted the Gunners a foothold in the tie.

The momentum quickly turned and, with their backs against the wall, the Blues failed to hold onto their lead. Leandro Trossard scored a late equaliser and Chelsea were denied ‘the cherry on top’ following three successive wins in the build-up.

While Pochettino has faced some criticism, Fernandez has backed his fellow countryman, sending a clear message to his teammates, fans, board and owners alike. Taking to Instagram this week, the Chelsea midfielder posted an image of himself training at Cobham with the caption: “Trust the process.”

In fact, after the Arsenal game, Pochettino was singing from a similar hymn sheet and reminded spectators that he’s working with a young team. The former Tottenham manager said: “It happens in all of the teams.

“Too many games that we watch every week and always mistakes. Football is about mistakes. If you want to score, the opponent made a mistake. I think 90 per cent of goals are because the opponent made a mistake when you score.

“Football is about mistakes. I think only we can criticise a little to read the situation better, the tempo, the timing. 77 minutes, sometimes take some risk. Okay, we can, because it’s our philosophy but maybe have better decisions. Maybe we can criticise a little bit this situation.

Pochettino later added: “We are still a really young team and we know each other and still not all of the squad are ready to compete for their place. We are in good momentum, we need to keep this momentum after three victories before the international break. I think we need to keep going, we really believe we can do something good in the future.”
