Newcastle player ratings vs Borussia Dortmund: Eddie Howe hangs Lewis Hall out to dry while Joelinton miss proves crucial in damaging Champions League defeat

Made one excellent delivery into the box, from which Joelinton missed a sitter, and ran all night long. Probably Newcastle’s best outfield player but given Hall’s struggles, Howe’s decision to leave him as a winger was bizarre.

Callum Wilson

Fed off scraps in the first-half and was replaced at half-time. A subdued display.

Joelinton

Tucked in at times and got involved in the defensive side of the game but missed a sitter at 1-0, as he somehow sent a header wide from five yards out. Dortmund went on to double their lead; it feels a mistake he will long regret.

Subs & Manager

Anthony Gordon

On for Hall. Always willing to take the ball but he just couldn’t make any inroads.

Miguel Almiron

Replaced Wilson at half-time. Fared about as well, as Newcastle struggled to move the ball up the pitch.

Lewis Miley

On late on for his European debut. A nice moment on a difficult night for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe

Got this so wrong. Yes, he’s dealing with injuries, but Howe effectively chose to hang Hall out to dry, and played Joelinton as a horrendously ineffective winger. His inexperience at this level was gratefully seized upon by Dortmund.
