Sergio Aguero is the all-time highest goalscorer of Man City and will eternally be remembered for his stoppage-time strike against QPR in the 2011/12 season.

The statue is a large piece of artwork situated outside the Etihad Stadium to mark the 10^th Anniversary of the iconic display of the legend.

Aguero’s strike came in the 94^th minute of the game against Queens Park Rangers in the final day fixture of the English Premier League. The Citizens came from two-nil down to defeat QPR and secure their first EPL title, with arch-rival Manchester United closely chasing the Roberto Mancini side till the last game of the season.

The Argentine striker proceeded to become the club’s all-time goalscorer. Aguero joined Machester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and had scored 260 goals in 360 appearances. For such an outstanding performance, a permanent reminder of his performance at the club has been erected and will forever be remembered.

Manchester City were lucky and fortunate to have landed the Argentine striker at Etihad from Atletico Madrid in June 2011 for a record fee of £38 million during the reign of Roberto Mancini as the manager of the club.

Before he exit the club in June 2021, Aguero was an icon and a legend to the club. He played a total of 390 games for City making him the third player with the highest appearance for the club after Sam Cowan (407 appearances) and Billy Meredith (394).

Out of the 390 games played, Aguero started 321 games, subbed on 69, and was subbed off 172 games, scoring 260 goals, a tally higher than any other player the club has ever had in the past, the second top scorer for the club after Aguero is Eric Brook who scored 177 goals, third is Tommy Johnson with 166 goals, both are nowhere closer to the argentine ace striker.

Also, out of the games played, Aguero was actively involved in 250 wins and recorded 63 draws and 77 losses. During his ten seasons in the club, he was only booked 29 times, that is, he was shown 28 yellow cards and one red card all through his time at Etihad.

His stay at Etihad can be tagged as the most successful period in the history of the club. It can be recalled that the club recorded a domestic treble in the 2018/2019 season winning the English Premier League title, the English FA Cup, and the League Cup title. Sergio Aguero won a total of fourteen domestic trophies during his time at Etihad, which includes five Premier League titles, two Community Shields, six league cups, and one FA Cup.

Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak released a press statement on the club’s official website about the insurmountable record and legacy left behind by the Argentina international, he said: “Sergio Aguero’s contribution to Manchester City in a defining era for the club cannot be overemphasized. He is indeed one of the greatest players to have ever played the game for City”. He further stressed that “When our fans think of Sergio Aguero, they are immediately drawn to the iconic moment of 93:20 and the goal that secured the club’s first league title in 44 years but as his record of 260 goals for the club demonstrates, his legacy and impact at Man City go far beyond that”.

“It is only fitting that Sergio Aguero has been recognized with a statue of his own, in celebration and honour of his accomplishments in one of the most important chapters of Manchester City’s rich and long history.”

Sergio Aguero’s Comment on His Statue at Man City

The 33-year-old Argentine striker was forced to retire from football due to a severe heart condition shortly after exiting Etihad to Barcelona as a free agent in June 2021.

Just like any other player, Aguero felt honoured by the erection of his statue at Etihad as a way of immortalizing him. He said, “Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, I was able to win a lot of trophies and was also able to help the club become one of the most important in the world”.

“I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”

Who Made Aguero’s Statue at Etihad?

Sergio Aguero’s statue was constructed by the famous Award-winning sculptor Andy Scott. The statue was carved using thousands of welded pieces of galvanized steel.

At the unveiling of the statue, the statue was illuminated with blue-tinted lighting at night which made it even more beautiful, unique, and dramatic.

Scott said, “It has been an honour to work on a project that means so much to Manchester City fans around the world in celebration of such an important player in the life of this football club”.

“I was under no illusion about how important this was to the club, to the fans, to Sergio himself and I hope that this statue brings joy and happiness to all who see it”

The newly erected statue of the Argentine is located on the east side of the Etihad Stadium and has caught the attention and interest of many. Obviously, it will continue to attract interest over the coming weeks, months, and years.

Nochtans maakte Van der Poel duidelijk dat hij geen schade heeft overgehouden aan zijn tuimeling: “Eigenlijk viel ik zelfs nog zacht”, aldus de Nederlander. “Ik kreeg gewoon mijn voet niet uit mijn klikpedaal in het zand, waardoor ik stomweg omviel. Maar ik heb er gelukkig geen last van.”

Zo zag vader Adrie het echter niet tijdens de wedstrijd. In een interview met Sporza stelde hij immers dat Van der Poel last ondervond van zijn eerdere valpartij, eerder nog dan van de koude. Al voegde Adrie er ook wel aan toe dat zijn zoon niet bepaald staat te springen voor een koers in de sneeuw.

Reken daarbij nog de haast ondragelijke koude, en we kregen een verkleumde Van der Poel te zien na de finish. In zijn interviews achteraf stond hij nog steeds te bibberen, en maakte de wereldkampioen duidelijk dat hij behoorlijk hard had afgezien.

“Het was geen aangename cross. Ik heb het nu al een beetje warmer, maar ik heb zeker veel koud geleden vandaag”, luidde het bij MVDP. “Je weet ook dat wanneer je nadien weer opwarmt, het vijf minuten echt veel pijn gaat doen. Met dat gevoel was ik de laatste rondes al bezig.”

Voor Van der Poel was de conclusie dan ook duidelijk: “Dit was de moeilijkste wedstrijd van het jaar. Na een tijd hadden mijn handen en voeten zo veel koud dat het niet meer vanzelf ging.” Nu maar hopen dat vader Adrie toch geen gelijk krijgt over een mogelijke blessure, die door onderkoeling mogelijk onder de radar zou zijn gebleven.
